Making Homemade Yogurt (using machine) Saturday, Oct 24 2009

I never thought to make yogurt at home since I couldn’t take dairy products very well, but recently I had a strong craving for it. Especially so when my mum bought a large tub of yogurt from the fresh yogurt place in the mall nearby. Blackforest flavoured yogurt was calling out to me… Oh my. Then we thought about how much yogurt we consume (I still take a few spoonfuls on a cheat basis), and how much money we have spent on commercial yogurt. So I went online to check if it was difficult to make, and surprisingly, it was easy!!

Using a machine offered the best consistent results, I read, so we bought a Severin yogurt machine yesterday. There was also a SMARTBEAN yogurt machine but the machine was more for those who use fresh, cold milk in a carton.

ANYWAY, it was really easy to get started. Here’s what you need: milk, plain yogurt, sterilized jars/containers, sterlized spoons. Follow instructions on yogurt machine and 6-8 hours later, fresh yogurt! I’ll be making soy yogurt later, so will take pictures to follow up on this post then!

Strawberry with Balsamic Vinegar Sunday, Oct 18 2009

Looking for new ways to eat strawberries? Want something easy? Try this!

Ingredients:

  • 1 punnet strawberries, rinsed, hulled & sliced into halves
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (can also use other types of sugars)

Method:

  1. Sprinkle sugar over strawberries.
  2. Add in balsamic vinegar and mix.
  3. Allow strawberries to stand in vinegar for 30mins to 1 hour.
  4. Enjoy the strawberries!

The vinegar will add another dimension to the berry flavour. Try it and you’ll know what I mean.

Oh oven… how I love thee! Seriously, I’ve been using my oven for almost everything since we got it. I had a late, greasy lunch, so I ended up having a late dinner which I wanted to be light since it was late, like 10pm. I searched online for a simple recipe and found Cheesy Tuna Melts!

They are really easy and fast!

Ingredients (serves 1 hungry girl):

  • 2 slices bread
  • 1 can tuna (I used tuna in light olive oil, but you can use tuna in brine if you’d prefer)
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 3 tbsp Kewpie mayonnaise
  • pepper to taste
  • salt to taste
  • butter/shortening
  • 1 slice processed cheese

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 200degreesC.
  2. Mix tuna, onion, mayonnaise, pepper and salt together.
  3. Top with cheese and cover with the other piece of bread. Lightly butter the top of sandwich.
  4. Bake in oven for 15min.
